Winston's Volo Kids Story

As a parent, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching your child grow—not just physically, but in character and confidence. For my ten-year-old son, Winston, and me, sports have become a shared passion. Thanks to the Volo Kids Foundation, what began as an after-school activity has transformed into something far more meaningful.
Winston’s journey with Volo Kids began at St. Vartan in New York City two years ago. At first, it was just about convenience and affordability—both essential factors for me as a single parent. But over time, it became clear that Volo Kids was more than just a sports program; it was a community, a second family that played an essential role in
shaping my son into the wonderful young man he is today. Even during the summers, when Winston stays with his father in Baltimore, Winston participates in the programs there. In addition to the continuity benefits it gives him, it also bridges our co-parenting across different states.
Through Volo Kids, Winston has learned invaluable lessons—leadership, teamwork, and how to be gracious in both victory and defeat. Skills that go beyond the field; life skills that will stay with him forever. Seeing him offer help to younger kids, even when things don’t go his way, fills me with pride. It’s not easy to lose after putting in so much time and energy, but Winston has become so much more gracious, thanks to the environment Volo Kids has created.
And it’s a community for the parents, too! We’ve built a tight-knit community of parents who gather every week with snacks, drinks, and blankets, watching our kids play and grow. We all have different stories—some of us are single, others married—but Volo Kids sports has brought us together. It’s become part of the fabric of our lives, helping us manage the ups and downs of parenting and life.
I am now a proud volunteer with Volo Kids and glad to give back because I see firsthand what programs like this can do for kids like Winston. It’s not just about winning games; it’s about becoming a more complete person. For some of these kids, sports are the reason they get up in the morning, the motivation to go to school and work hard. I know because I was one of those kids. Sports saved my life, and now I see them doing the same for my son and so many others.
Donate today to provide more kids like Winston access to the benefits that sports provide!
